OK International has been a leading manufacturer of production assembly equipment for over 60 years.

OK International acquired Metcal and Techcon Systems in 1996, and Impell in 2002. These acquisitions, along with becoming part of Dover Corporation in November 2000, served to strengthen the OK International’s core competencies in the manufacturing and development of soldering systems as well as dispensing and fume filtration products.

After the merger completed, OK International’s in need to merge this four distinctive companies into a single cohesive and intuitive web presence.

The development objectives are:

1. Massive scalability. They had to support hundred of thousands of documents and hundreds of users. The original framework had its’s limitations; it could only support up to 2,000 documents and its performance got exponentially slower as additional documents were added.

2. Web-only deployment. They could not easily deploy a required component of framework, because they have many desktops of different standards located throughout the world.

3. Robust reporting capabilities. They needed the ability to report on any of the parameters in the documentation.

4. Fine-grained permissions. Because of the potentially sensitive nature of the documentation, users need to only see information that relates to their business function.

New Avenue worked on the original Framework to transition the documents into the new ruby on rails based web solution. We developed countless migration script to allow flawless documents and users migration

Scalability is more than just the number of transactions per second that the solution can do. The solution has to meet the performance goals, but it also has to present the vast quantities of information in such a way that people can use it efficiently.

We analyzed the common work tasks that people would perform, and made sure that each part of the user interface was capable of supporting those tasks.

For instance, with several thousands users, we couldn’t just display a drop down with all of the users. That would be an impossibly awkward interface. We developed a context sensitive user selection dialog using AJAX. It would first show a subset of users that were related to the context of the user selection.
